Empowering Women in the Brisas de Comuneros Neighborhood

The LEO Fund proudly announces its latest project, the Empoderamiento Económico a Mujeres Afro del Asentamiento Brisas de Comuneros (Economic Empowerment of Afro-Colombian Women in the Brisas de Comuneros neighborhood) in the Aguablanca area east of Cali. Seeking to open doors, provide access to professional training, and create economic opportunities for 20 women living within the area, The LEO Fund is partnering with La Asociación Cultural Red. Established in 1996, La Asociación Cultural Red works with more than 150 youth, artistic, cultural, elderly, recreation, women's, library and community NGO groups in impoverished areas around Cali, Colombia.

Due to the conditions in the area, women are often at risk due to a lack of decent housing, lack of access to basic public services and no real job opportunities. The Economic Empowerment of Afro-Colombian Women in the Brisas de Comuneros project will provide a cooperative approach to personal and professional development for the Las Cocadas de mi Amá food cooperative, where women participate in professionally hosted team building workshops, food preparation training, marketing and business classes. Their goal is to expand their food business, increasing economic opportunities and opening possibilities to more positive futures for the women who participate in the program.

The Las Delicias de Mujeres food cooperative prepares and sells traditional Pacific-Coast foods and candies in libraries around the Aguablanca area. The LEO Fund's grant is being used to rent kitchen space for food preparation, as well as purchasing professional cooking equipment, utensils, food packaging and labeling materials.

As a partner, The LEO Fund is committed to working in solidarity with dedicated and motivated programs such as this that empower and positively impact the lives of those who genuinely deserve it.
