The Colombian Southwest: Territories of Opportunity

Young people who are part of the communications group RECOM RP get ready to present proposals for social transformation

In the south of Colombia, on the Pacific coast, in the Department of Nariño, there is a municipality overflowing with unparalleled greenery, thanks to its abundant vegetation and the waters of the Telembí River, which exude their beauty, nourished by four rivers.

Roberto Payán’s municipal seat is San José de las Lagunas, which is a remote place in Colombia whose roads are not concrete. In the wide waterways, hope is born for young people.

Since 2021, through the Territories of Opportunity program, Image Arts is implementing the De Sanquianga and Telembí pa'l Mundo project, aimed at strengthening a Network of Communications Groups that produce and manage content with economic objectives. The project also ensures activities are lawful and achieve formalization processes for participants.

The RECOM RP collective -Roberto Payán's Communication Network-, is one of the initiatives that tries to formalize itself, to then open opportunities to its members; This is how Image Arts, in alliance with THE LEO FUND -The LEO Fund-, a Non-Governmental Organization, have come together to generate synergies with technical support and accompaniment to this group, as one of its next partners in Colombia, to promote the creation of opportunities in the territories and the social transformation of the communities.

The LEO Fund aims to cooperate in the achievement of positive social changes by providing equal opportunities for development, by empowering CSOs -Civil Society Organizations- to access public and private resources, through the design, management and financing of projects and/or support for the formalization of their undertakings, which strengthens the growth of leaders linked to social processes or civil society organizations, who work in impoverished areas of Colombia.

Currently, within the framework of this partnership, RECOM RP participates in the formulation of a proposal to legally formalize the group, so that through communication the institutional offer is promoted, access to information is facilitated and opportunities are provided for adequate use in the occupation of free time, mainly among the young people of their municipality and the village area. The project ultimately impacts the lives of the young people in the group and becomes a way to generate income.

This initiative is a great opportunity to attract development, hope, and new opportunities for young people, taking into account that one of the purposes is to direct the group towards its legal constitution, with the possibility of being implementers of a project that will mobilize resources that range between 8 and 10 million pesos, which leaves installed capacity and promotes social transformations in territories of opportunity.

Neyder Ortiz, from the RECOM RP collective -Roberto Payán's Communication Network-, affirms that the digital production initiative, in which he participates, is a great opportunity for the youth of his municipality. The initiative, De Sanquianga and Telembí pa'l Mundo, allows the institutional offer to be promoted from communication, access to information is facilitated, opportunities for new projects are provided for young people and it becomes a lawful way to generate income.

RECOM RP, has been recognized by THE LEO FUND -The LEO Fund-, a Non-Governmental Organization, as one of its next partners in Colombia, with which it seeks to promote the creation of opportunities in the territories and the social transformation of the communities, through through technical support and accompaniment for the group.
